<image:caption>daybreak star cultural center discovery park, seattle 2011 The center developed from activism by Bernie Whitebear, and other community organizers, who staged an occupation of a former military base in 1970. The base had been declared surplus by the us department of defense, and local activists used the law under the 1865 US-Indian Treaty promising reversion of surplus military lands to their original owners, to make claim to the land. Daybreak Star functions as a conference center, a location for pow wows, a head start school program, and an art gallery.</image:caption>

Inspired by his relationship with neighborhood youth (whom he witnessed getting groceries from the gas station), Capuchin Friar Brother Rick Samyn decided to help young people understand what good food was, and where it came from. The garden was created to connect people to each other, the land, and their food.</image:caption>

The top of the X delineated the date the team arrived. Moving clockwise, the next number summarized the hazards found within. Lynchings were violent and public acts of torture that traumatized black people throughout the country and were largely tolerated by state and federal officials. EJI has documented more than 4000 racial terror lynchings in 12 Southern states between the end of Reconstruction in 1877 and 1950. EJI is working with communities to commemorate and recognize the traumatic era of lynching by collecting soil from lynching sites across the country. These jars of collected soil serve as a visible memory of the history of racial injustice in the US.</image:caption>

Virginia (1960), which declared that segregation in interstate travel, including bus station facilities, violated the Interstate Commerce Act. Despite the ruling, law enforcement officials within some local jurisdictions in southern states still supported segregation between African Americans and European Americans on interstate buses, and many citizens in the South also supported the segregationist stance within their towns. On May 20, 1961, the Freedom Riders were attacked by a local mob at this location, which was formerly the Montgomery Greyhound Bus Station.</image:caption>

<image:caption>penn center st. helena island, south carolina 2019 Penn Center was founded in 1862 – about six months before the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, and about three years before the Civil War ended. It was one of several schools established on Saint Helena Island as part of the Port Royal Experiment. The leaders of this experiment were primarily philanthropists, abolitionists, and missionaries from Pennsylvania. They came to the Beaufort area after Union soldiers took control of the Port Royal Sound. Their focus was to help recently freed enslaved South Carolinians prepare for freedom by teaching them literacy and ways to survive economically. They named the school in honor of their home state, which had been named for Quaker activist William Penn.</image:caption>

<image:caption>blue bottle tree north charleston, south carolina 2019 The tradition of the Blue Bottle Tree is thought to have originated around 6th century AD - a practice brought to the Americas with enslaved Africans. By hanging glass bottles in a tree, evil spirits would find their way into the bottles and become stuck. They would remain in the bottle until morning and the morning sun would then destroy the spirits. This shade of blue is said to represent water, which spirits cannot pass over, and is considered soothing and healing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>kinloch, missouri 2024 Kinloch is the oldest of five African American communities in Missouri. At its peak, Kinloch had a population of up to 6,500 people. Today, it has around 280 residents. Much of this population decline is due to city efforts. In the 1980s, the City of St. Louis began buying property in Kinloch to expand Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport, significantly reducing the community's size. Eventually, the airport acquired the majority of private homes in Kinloch. Between 1990 and 2000, Kinloch lost more than 75 percent of its population. In addition to population loss, Kinloch now faces high levels of environmental toxicity due to illegal dumping.</image:caption>

<image:caption>missouri history museum st. louis, missouri 2024 St. Louis, often called the "Gateway to the West," was significantly shaped by the beaver fur trade during the 18th and 19th centuries. This bustling city emerged as a key trading hub due to its strategic location along the Mississippi River, facilitating the exchange of beaver pelts between trappers, traders, and European markets. The economic boom from the fur trade spurred growth, drawing settlers, merchants, and adventurers to the region. Beaver fur was particularly prized for its water-resistant properties and dense underfur, which made it ideal for crafting high-quality felt hats. These hats were highly fashionable and in great demand across Europe and North America, driving the lucrative fur trade. However, the beaver fur trade also had dire ecological consequences. The relentless trapping led to the overexploitation of beaver populations, causing their numbers to plummet. Beavers are vital to maintaining healthy wetlands and waterways, and their decline disrupted local ecosystems. The overhunting not only endangered beavers but also affected other species and habitats dependent on the wetlands. St. Louis's fur trade legacy is a story of economic success marred by the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, highlighting the environmental costs of the city's early prosperity.</image:caption>

Native Americans and Europeans defined land boundaries differently. Native Americans defined boundaries in terms of their relationship to practical needs: important topographical features, places with ample food, and places that were uninhabited. Europeans and European Americans, on the other hand, used boundaries as tools for establishing ownership over the land. To achieve this goal, they laid imaginary lines and abstract measurements across early St. Louis and the American West to promote exclusion and extraction of the land.</image:caption>

Their faces, their stories. Strained eyes, stooped backs Those lessons at the foot of elders The smell of fresh rain Echoes of the hills, the fields, the sea Sisters, daughters, We must not forget In sinewy strands we find our humanity In the weave of the past A defiant hope shines Something to cling to To connect us A lattice of beautiful possibility. Collective future, calls us forward To entwine filaments of resilience Incandescent with kinship Rooting us to fertile soil Reaching skyward for the clouds A living witness to history Heavy with murmurs of ancestors These threads are not the last we weave, With softness and power. Missouri is a "constitutional carry" state, meaning that individuals who are legally allowed to possess firearms can carry them openly without a permit. However, there are restrictions on where firearms can be carried, such as government buildings, schools, and certain establishments serving alcohol. Additionally, individuals must be at least 19 years old to carry a firearm, and carry permits are available for those who wish to carry concealed firearms.</image:caption>

<image:caption>el departamento de la comida caguas - boriken | puerto rico 2025 El Departamento de la Comida (El Depa) is a nonprofit collective in Caguas, Puerto Rico, dedicated to food sovereignty and community resilience through agroecology and collaborative projects. Founded in 2010, it has grown from a community-supported agriculture initiative into a hub that includes a shared commercial kitchen, an agricultural resource library, and programs that support local farmers, especially those from historically marginalized communities. Its mission is to build a just, decolonized, and regenerative food system in Puerto Rico.</image:caption>

Through its "Arboleda Ancestral Taína," the garden educates visitors about Taíno traditions by showcasing native plants integral to their way of life, such as yuca and batata, and by reconstructing indigenous bateyes—ceremonial plazas used for social gatherings and ritual ball games—to illustrate traditional Taíno practices.</image:caption>

<image:caption>yauco boriken | puerto rico 2025 Yaucromatic, launched in 2017 in Yauco, Puerto Rico by Arte Para Unir and community activist Jonathan “Pito” Hernández, transforms the town’s streets into a vibrant open-air gallery of murals. Guided by the principle “Art is not only for museums, it is for the people,” the project engages local residents and artists to celebrate culture, foster community pride, and revitalize neighborhoods, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Over multiple editions, it has produced dozens of murals reflecting themes of heritage, social change, and hope, while attracting tourism and economic growth.</image:caption>
